The Seventh Month of Pregnancy
During the 7th month, a third control ultrasound is performed. It allows verifying the proper maturation of the fetus (size of organs and limbs) and confirming the sex if doubts remained during the second ultrasound. It also allows visualizing the fetus's position in preparation for childbirth.
Baby: Most vital organs are functioning; eyelids open, and the visual system is active, distinguishing between shadow and light. Lung vascularization accelerates, indicating respiratory maturity. By the 27th week, the fetus's weight exceeds one kilogram, gaining over 100 grams per day from this point. It becomes chubby like a baby, requiring additional energy and nutrient needs to support skeletal growth and cellular development. Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and a full range of micronutrients are essential for the fetus's harmonious development. At the end of the 7th month, the length is about 35 cm, and the weight is approximately 1.3 kg.
Mom: Your body continues to change. Heavier, you move less agilely, and daily chores seem exhausting. You start to focus more on childbirth (preparation), and your mind projects onto post-pregnancy. You may feel apprehensive about assuming your role as a future mother, which is entirely normal.
The Eighth Month of Pregnancy
Baby: More confined, the fetus moves less, which is normal. It may already be in position to exit, head down. By the 33rd week, the five senses are awake, and the fetus experiences new sensations like sucking its thumb or touching a toe. There is still a month left until the end of pregnancy, but babies born prematurely at the end of the eighth month may have experienced accelerated growth and are born weighing around 2.2 kg. A premature birth at 8 months is less problematic than situations of extreme prematurity.
Mom: You have gained weight, and so has your baby. Regarding weight gain, be careful not to let go just because the due date is approaching. The extra pounds are never easy to lose! Physically, your body is preparing for childbirth. The pelvis opens and loosens under hormonal action to allow the baby to pass through. This can be painful. Your belly is tense, and your posture is arched. You may experience painless contractions, so take rest and avoid prolonged standing. Your breasts are swollen and heavier; massage them with a moisturizing cream to prevent stretch marks and prepare them for breastfeeding. You are actively preparing for your child's arrival: nursery equipment, clothes. Your days and thoughts are occupied.
The Ninth Month of Pregnancy
Baby: During the ninth month, the baby grows and gains weight rapidly. It can grow 5 cm in 2 weeks and gain 300 g in one week. From the 38th week, childbirth can occur at any time. If it had not yet turned, the fetus changes position, head down. It prepares for childbirth, and its low position puts less pressure on your diaphragm. The vernix (whitish protective layer) and the lanugo that protected its skin disappear; your baby is ready to be born. At birth, the average weight is generally around 3 kg for 50 cm.
Mom: All the "aches" of the past few months are amplified: swollen and painful breasts, arching, pressure on the bladder, fatigue, heavy legs, back pain, contractions, etc. Take all the necessary rest and savor the moment; your child's birth is imminent.
